“You want to open a channel with a biomedical engineer, correct? ...You plan to send and receive documents? You understand I will not tolerate any leaking of Red advancements?”

“It’s just letters and photos. With my girl. No interest in whatever science shit they got up there. And certainly no interest in sharin’ what we write to each other.”

- M to Jonny, Book I

Ava is Jonny’s other half, 40 million miles away on Mars. Although they’ve been apart for years, their bond remains fresh in both of their minds. They met in high school, when Ava was just learning the depths of her scientific talents, and Jonny was riding a full music scholarship. Back then, Ava thought everything was mapped out for her. Although she was skilled at stealing from her parents’ liquor cabinet undetected, she envisioned she would ultimately end up like her focused academic family. She loved school, and it got even better when Jonny started spending every lunch with her, trading his mixtapes for her insight on his homework. They brought out the best in each other. June, Sherm, and Charlie immediately recognized that Ava and Jonny belonged in each other's lives.

Ava had always admired the Red Planet, raised on tales of the anarcho-communist Martian utopia. When Jonny started spending time at her family home in Brooklyn Heights, he too learnt about interstellar politics, and how Russia made it to Mars. Her parents were keen to emigrate, and when Jonny agreed to join them, Ava felt like her destiny was materializing before her.

When tragedy struck Redacted.   Redacted.   Redacted.   Redacted.   Redacted.   Redacted.   Redacted.   Redacted. Jonny missed the shuttle. He was locked up, and Ava was on her way to Mars. Their intended places in the universe were by each other’s side, but stuck waiting for the next flight in five years, the two lovers took 'long-distance relationship' to new frontiers.

He thought about the day that his brain had painted for him.

It was spent with friends, playing guitar, and pining for Ava.

He saw her face, subtly smiling, and felt a wash of calm.
